Youth Money Management

Youth Money Management

This program is designed to teach children grades 6-12 about the banking system and help them explore the real “buying power of money” in order to make sound decisions about managing their money and spending wisely. It will also address the basic purposes and roles of banks and the banking and teach them how their education, skills and career choices may influence their future earnings. The program will teach children the purpose of budgeting and basic budgeting strategies and will help them to create their own personal budgets. The program will explore and compare savings and checking accounts, explain how savings and checking accounts work, describe the benefits of using these basic accounts to manage money, and teach the youth how to complete the forms necessary for making deposits and withdrawals from these accounts. The program will also teach children how to balance a checking account, calculate and compare the total cost of paying for a purchase with cash compared to paying for it over time with a credit card, and evaluate the characteristics of responsible borrowers. The program will also teach children how to calculate and compare the returns on simple investments and compute the average of a given set of data.
